Duties and Excise

The import duties on wine vary significantly between countries and mainly depend on:

• type of duty (specific and ad valorem)
• amount of the duty itself
• wine categories and sub-categories (sparkling, bottled <2L, bulk)
• alcohol content of the wine

In order to provide a comparison between the world’s main wine importers in terms of customs duties, the average import duty paid on Italian wines, as shown in the maps, was calculated as an ad valorem duty based on average prices of Italian wine imports in the markets considered and the average EUR-foreign currency exchange rate (2014).
